Almost time

It's almost time for my son, Henry Wayne, to be born! I'm not sure where 9 months went, but here we are, only a couple of weeks away from my due date! I've been having crazy contractions for the past three days, but nothing yet that would signal to head to the hospital.

So here I sit, waiting for the 'lil guy to enter the world.

Well, not really just sitting. There's lots of stuff to still get done before he makes his arrival...

We themed Henry's room around fabric my uber-talented sis-in-law picked out to make his quilt. I friggin' adore those owls! And the fabric is from Wal-Mart, believe it or not.

I'm in LOVE with the color we picked for the room. Believe it or not, it's from Wal-Mart too! I was
really iffy on using paint from there, as we've only ever purchased expensive paint from Home Depot and Lowes, but it went on really well and only took two coats. My husband was lovin' it!

The room needed a dresser, and I wasn't thrilled about spending a lot of money on one, so I was ecstatic when I found one for $15 at my local Goodwill. A few coats of paint later, and some funky knobs from Hobby Lobby, and voila! A dresser fit for a little boy!

Now all that's left is making a valance for his window using the cute owl fabric, and also making a dust ruffle for his crib. I hope I have enough time!!

And if I get all that done, I was thinking about making these cute owls out of the leftover fabric... But who am I kidding, I'll be lucky to get the valance and dust ruffle done. hahaha!

In celebration of Chuggington's second DVD release set for April 5th, I'm giving away a copy of Chuggers to the Rescue to one of my blog readers.

Crockpot Chicken 'N Noodles

Today, since there's snow on the ground and just basically yuck outside, I thought I would share one of my family's favorite warm-you-up dinners.

It is the easiest and tastiest version of Chicken 'N Noodles you will ever eat. Just throw the ingredients in the crockpot and you've got a delicious meal your whole family will love. {Even my 4-year-old chows down on this one.}

Crockpot Chicken 'N Noodles

1 lb. frozen chicken breasts {thawed}
1 10.5 oz. can cream of chicken soup
1 32 oz. chicken broth
1 stick of butter
1 {large} or 2 {small} Reames frozen noodles

Combine chicken, soup, broth and butter in crockpot. Cook on low 8 hours or high 4 hours. Shred chicken with a fork after cooking for appropriate time. Add noodles, let cook for additional 1/2 hour in crockpot.

Serve with mashed potatoes, biscuits, or any other comfort food you can think of.

That's it! It's seriously easy, and seriously really good.

Dollar Store Spring Wreath

I desperately needed a new spring wreath for my front door. The one I bought last year from K-Mart {on clearance} had lost its fresh appeal after a season of heat and rain. I don't have lots of extra funds right now, so I thought, why not visit my favorite Dollar Store to make my own. {Because wreaths are EXPENSIVE!}

I'm always surprised what I find when I visit my Dollar Store. They have anything and everything. And their selection of silk flowers always impresses. So, $11 later I walked out with enough flowers, ribbons and greenery to make my new wreath, without breaking the bank.

To assemble the wreath, I used:
   • An old grapevine wreath that had been stashed in my basement for several years
   • A hot glue gun
   • Silk flowers {purchased at Dollar Store}
   • Greenery {purchased at Dollar Store}
   • Ribbon (purchased at Dollar Store}

I love the way it turned out, and it looks great on my front door.

The Dollar Store is a GREAT place to shop for craft supplies. You'd be surprised what you can make with the items from there.

Akron Zoo + Groupon = Fun!

It just so happened that about a month ago Groupon's deal of the day was for half price family membership to the Akron Zoo. I had some Groupon bucks in reserve and was able to score our family pass for ONLY $14!

Sooo, with a high temperature of 69º this past Friday, my daughter and I headed to the Akron Zoo. We've been visiting this particular zoo since she was born.

It's the perfect size for small kids. There are several playgrounds, a great picnic area, and a new carousel. They are also installing a new "Farmland" set to open this spring. They used to have a farm area where kids could pet sheep and goats, but this looks a lot better and more kid friendly. My daughter, Viv, was super excited about it {but she gets excited about anything to do with animals}.

Every year I take a picture of her on her favorite frog statue near the gardens. And every year I'm amazed how much she's grown. This year was no exception.

We're looking forward to a fun-filled summer of inexpensive fun at the zoo.

Well, that is, if we can make it through the gift shop without buying something every time...

Reality Check

My life has been crazy. Plain and simple. My husband changed jobs in November {yay!}, we found out we were having a baby due in July {yay!!} and then we realized we wouldn't have insurance for 3 months {whoops}. The holidays came. Along with the fun insanity that goes along with Christmas, my photography studio practically exploded with clients. This was my first true year in business, and I certainly wasn't expecting the response I received. I started to get so busy with the studio, housework, motherhood, maternityhood and wifeyhood, that I progressively forgot to do things {anything!} for myself.

My sewing machine and table turned into a junk collecting heap. My couponing habit went to the wayside. My art supplies have been lost in the netherworld of our basement. I was so wrapped up in the go-go-go lifestyle I had created, I couldn't see past the end of my nose as to what I was missing, mainly everything I love.

My daughter started spending more time with her grandparents, and great-aunt because I was so swamped with the studio and day-to-day living. I didn't even have time for her. And that is terrible.

And then I got sick. Really sick. Hospital sick. Eight days worth of quality hospital time to be exact. I think all the mindless stress I had created caught up with me and burnt me good. My hubby was there by my side every minute of the day. But during my stay, I had lots of time to think {or else watch VH1 marathons}. I realized what I was doing to myself, and realized I needed to change, and change NOW.

My phone didn't need to be checked every three minutes for the latest incoming emails and Facebook updates. I didn't need to answer my phone every time it rang. Facebook didn't need to be updated with my latest photo shoot every day. Laundry could chill if I didn't have time to get to it. Clients could wait a couple of hours for me to get back to them, at a time that was convenient for myself, and my family.

After I got home from the hospital, I decided to start making small changes. I started taking naps with my daughter. We have craft time every day. One load of laundry a day is enough. My phone spends part of its day on vibrate. I have designated times for the studio, and more times for my family. I'm making a point to do one thing for myself every day. Today, it's posting on my blog.

I'm determined to de-stress my life in any way that I can, and to appreciate the life that was given to me. I hadn't stopped to smell the roses in a long time, and boy, they sure smell good.

Making a stuffed animal on the cheap

For my birthday this year, my parents bought me a sewing machine. I was so excited - my old one bit the big one and I've been chomping at the bit for a new one. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a good sewer by any means. But I love a good project and the feeling that I'm making something less expensively than if I would have purchased it.

I decided my first project would be a stuffed animal for my daughter. I didn't want to pay for a pattern because I didn't know how it would turn out, what my sewing machine would do, how bad I would screw it up, etc.

I scoured the web and found this gem of a pattern/tutorial here, courtesy of Toad's Treasures. I showed it to my daughter, she said she loved that it was an owl, and off she ran. (I thought that was a good sign, right?) This pattern is free to download and customizable in every aspect. Thank you so much, Emily, for posting this super cute and super easy pattern!

I used scraps of material that I had lying around for years and came up with this cute little owl. I am happy to report that my sewing machine worked just fine, I didn't screw up too noticeably, and my daughter really likes her owl.

The best part? I only spent $2 for safety eyes. The rest I had lying around.

It was completely worth it for me to sew a stuffed animal for my daughter rather than go out and buy something. I was able to use up scraps of material and make something especially for her she will (hopefully) remember for years to come.

I think there's more stuffed animals up my sleeves in the near future. Watch out.

I never thought getting back into daily routines would be so much fun. seriously.

The last time I blogged, I talked about our house getting hit by a pickup truck. Turns out the fun didn't end there... I think I'm jinxed.

My great-uncle passed away the day after our house was hit. So, that weekend I traveled with my daughter and my mom and dad out-of-state for his viewing and funeral. On our way home we were involved in a fender bender on the highway. No damage to our car, but it shook us up enough!

The next morning I woke up, (at our pickup-damaged house) let our dog outside to do his morning business, and witnessed a man walking across our intersection get hit by a truck going about 50 mph.

In short, it's been a hell of a couple weeks.

What a week

I feel like it's been forever since I've posted on Cheapie Cheapie. So much has happened this week..

Our house was hit by a pickup truck early Thursday morning. I'm not joking.

We live on a corner and there was a head on collision in front of our house. We live pretty far back from the road, but the pickup involved went careening through our front yard into our house.

THANK GOODNESS we were not there when it happened. I took my 3-year-old daughter and our dog the night before and spent the night at my mom and dad's on a whim. Otherwise I would have been reading the news online and drinking my coffee when the truck hit our computer room. It's really scary to think about the what-ifs.

I don't know the condition of the people involved in the accident. I do know they both went to the hospital and the man has to be there for awhile.

And I know the lady that caused the accident and crashed into our house is uninsured. Yep.

Thankfully we have awesome home-owner's insurance. They are taking care of us every step of the way. This is going to be a long process for repairs, but our house is livable while they work.

A word to the wise about those of you that use cell phones instead of home phones: When you get your driver's license renewed make sure your cell phone is listed with your driver's license. The State Highway Patrol couldn't get ahold of us because we only use cell phones and they couldn't locate our numbers. They ended up finding my in-laws and then my in-laws contacted me. It made for an extremely stressful morning to say the least. Save yourself the time and the hassle in case of an emergency and get your cell listed with your license. Trust me on this one.

Giant Eagle Took My Cereal

So I thought I was super cool a couple of week's ago when I went to Giant Eagle and cleared their shelves out of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Kix and Golden Grahams. The Giant had it on sale for 4/$4 and then I had $1/off 3 boxes. That's super cheap cereal, right? I loaded my cart to the brink because in our family, cereal does not last long.

As with every grocery trip, after I got home and unloaded all my groceries I spent a good ten minutes gloating over my receipt and analyzing my coupon savings. (I never said I wasn't a nerd.) As I was gloating on this week's savings, I realized I had grabbed the wrong size boxes of cereal and was actually charged between $3 and $4 PER BOX. Seriously?? That's a lot of money I just wasted for crappy sugar filled cereal!!

I loaded up the cereal and took it back to Giant Eagle. I'm sure I was a sight to behold walking into the Giant with bags upon bags of cereal and my 'lil 3-year-old helping me carry it all.

Yes, they will let you return food. I'm not sure how I feel about that. But I have $25 back in my wallet, so for today, that's a good thing.

I've been soo busy with my day job lately!

One deal worth mentioning is ending at Giant Eagle on November 4 (that's THIS WEDNESDAY). If you buy 4 participating Betty Crocker products you get a FREE cookie sheet or cake pan. Products include cookie mixes, Warm Delights, frosting, and brownie mixes. Check you coupon stock because you should have a lot of those coupons handy. In fact, you can get Betty Crocker frosting for just $.50 this week with a newspaper coupon from a few weeks back. The cookie sheets and cake pans should be located in the baking aisle. I have been able to get 3 free cookie sheets. woo!

I've been thinking a lot lately about the future of my blog. I love couponing and finding great deals, but my every day life is becoming more and more demanding and I just couldn't see where Cheapie Cheapie fit in. I know I started Cheapie Cheapie as a blog/journal about my adventures with frugality, but somewhere along the way I think I lost that original idea.

I was seriously thinking about hanging up the keyboard for awhile because I just felt like I couldn't keep up with everything. I read lots of other blogs about couponing and deals and their posts are so numerous and overwhelming -- I began to feel like my blog was so little and overlooked and was basically for nothing. (I know, this sounds like a pity party, right? It's not, I swear.)

At any rate, I received a few of the nicest e-mails in the past couple of weeks thanking me for Cheapie Cheapie. I had no idea that this 'lil ole blog was affecting so many people in such a positive way. I've had the biggest smile on my face from those e-mails. You have no idea how happy they made me. :)

I want every single person reading this to know YOU are the reason I write this blog. I want to help you as much as I can with living inexpensively. Those e-mails have made me realize that this blog isn't for nothing. Even if I'm helping one person, I'm helping one person. And that's huge!!

As for the future of Cheapie Cheapie, I will continue to post my insane coupon wheelin' and dealin'. I'm no expert at this, to be sure, but I think I can muddle my way through this enough so we can all benefit from the power of coupons.

I'm going to try and start a weekly CVS Challenge for myself, and to teach all of you how to manage CVS from the very first baby step of walking through their doors to walking away with tons of free product.

How to Get More Newspaper Coupons -- Cheapie

I used to have a subscription to our local Sunday newspaper. I would look forward to every Sunday morning drinking my coffee and clippin' my coupons.

BUT, not so long ago our local delivery service became sub-par, and before we knew it, we were only getting the D section of the Sunday paper and having the front page thrown in our driveway sometime on Monday. Needless to say, after lots of Sunday phone calls to the paper with no change in delivery, we cancelled our subscription.

I started to think outside the box as to how to get my newspaper coupons. Here are some ideas that I've tried and yes, they do work.

Our local grocery store offers the newspaper for half price on Mondays. I do all of my grocery shopping on Mondays anyways, so this works out wonderfully for me.
Ask your grocery store what they do with their old papers. Last week I asked our other local grocer -- They throw them away on Mondays! Now I have a super sweet lady save them for me every Sunday. I'm getting at least 9 papers a week for FREE. All you have to do is ask.
Ask friends and family for their coupon inserts. Most likely they'd love to pass them along to you. (And if you throw them some of your deals now and again, I'm sure they'd looove to hand those coupons over).
Join a Coupon Swap Group. You can find them at afullcup.com, or if you live in the Northeast Ohio area, try northeastohiocouponers.com. Coupon Swaps usually meet once a month and trade coupons. I haven't gone to one yet, but if my life ever slows down I would really like to give one a shot.

I Might Have Lost My Mind Part II

I think I did it! After many, many, many days of nervously waiting around, all of my offers for the Silver, Gold and Platinum Tiers were approved. I cannot believe it.

I printed off my certificate stating I've fulfilled all requirements and will be mailing it certified tomorrow. In 6-8 weeks I should have my $500 gift card. That's not possible, right??? right????

All said and done, I spent right around $55 for this offer. I didn't catch one of my free trials in time and was billed $30 for 1 month. But other than that, I've played everything by the books.

This is just too good to be true. I think I'll only really believe this when I have that $500 gift card in my hand. (And you better believe you'll hear me screaming on high if it really does arrive!)

With Halloween and my daughter's third birthday right around the corner, I've been looking longingly at my sewing machine thinking of super cute costumes, clothing and crafts to make for both upcoming occasions. I might have lost my mind...

Alright, I got sucked in.

I've been reading blog posts about how to make extra money by completing online offers. I've been researching them. I've been scrutinizing every last punctuation mark in them. And I finally gave in and tried one out.

I am freaking out right now. I stayed up until midnight last night finishing my very first $500 offer (yes, you read that right), and now I have to play the waiting game to find out if it went through.

I guess I should back up a bit and start from where I found all this information and let my mind take a breather in the meantime. *deep breath*

I started out one day by reading a guest post on Hip2Save. It explained in great detail the ins and outs of completing online offers from legitimate companies to earn HUGE rewards. (And by HUGE I mean $500 Visa giftcards, a Nintendo Wii, etc.) I consider Hip2Save an extremely valid and reliable source of information so I was immediately intrigued. This eventually turned into hours of scrutinizing Hip2Save's guest blogger, Nicole's Nickels and eventually, MoneySavingMethods. Now, these ladies know their stuff when it comes to completing these online offers. MoneySavingMethods has made something like $15,000 over the past few years by completing these darn things. After reading comment after comment about regular folks trying out these offers and succeeding I decided that, hey, I can do this too.

So, I picked an offer that MoneySavingMethods recommends, a $500 Visa gift card plus a Got Milk t-shirt. (I could really care less about the t-shirt, but hey, if they're gonna give it to me...)

It took me a little over 2 hours to complete all the required sub-offers, and if all goes well, I will have spent right around $40 to score a $500 Visa gift card. That just doesn't sound possible does it?? Am I losing my mind? I'm completely second guessing myself tonight and wondering if I did the right thing. There are a lot of loop holes and tricks that you have to be aware of, but I followed MoneySavingMethod's detailed instructions, so I think I'm in the clear.

I will post updates weekly as to how my ~~disaster~~ adventure is progressing. To obtain my particular gift card, you have to complete 8 individual offers within 3 different tiers: 2 silver offers; 2 gold offers; and 4 platinum offers. Oh, and you have 60 days to finish everything.

I haven't been having very good luck at Target when it comes to the deal scene lately. It seems like everyone that does "deals" gets there before me and ruins all the fun.

Well not today.

I was AMAZED at what I was able to get for $4.05 out of pocket.

Here's what I got and how you can do it too!

-- Glade Scented Oil Cans are on sale for 3/$5 = $1.66 each.

If you open the tin, there is a $1.50 coupon inside. Use that when you hit the checkout lane and spend only $.16 per tin! (I purchased 10 for a total of $1.60)

-- I found AirWick FreshMatic Ultra air fresheners on clearance for $6.46.

I used my $6 off coupon from the newspaper and was able to score this for $.46! (The coupon said it was good for the iMotion brand, but the cashier scanned it and had no problems with it.)

-- The 5 oz. packages of Chef Michael's Dog Food were on clearance for $.50 each. That in itself is a great deal!

I used the FREE 5 oz. package of Chef Michael's Dog Food coupon from the newspaper. (I was able to score 3 of these for FREE!)

-- AirWick Scented Oil iMotion air fresheners are on sale for $4.99.

I used the $4 off coupon from the newspaper making the final cost = $.99

-- Market Pantry string cheese singles are regularly priced at $.40 each.

Buy two and use the $1 off 2 Market Pantry cheeses Target coupon from here to snag these for FREE.

-- Pepperidge Farm Mini Chocolate Chunk cookies can be found in the $1 bins at the front of the store.
